As the earth awakens from its winter rest, spring arrives with a sense of movement, renewal and possibility. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), spring is deeply connected to the Wood element, which governs growth, vision, and the smooth flow of energy throughout the body.
Just as seeds sprout and trees stretch towards the light, our bodies — and spirits — want to open, move, and begin again.
The Wood Element & Liver Energy
In the Five Elements system, Wood is associated with the Liver and Gallbladder organs. Wood also contributes to structure in the body through the tendons and ligaments that support our joints — as well as structure in life, helping us feel aligned with our values and purpose.
These are the organs responsible for:
- The free flow of Qi (energy) and emotions
- Detoxification and cleansing
- Planning, clarity and direction
When the Wood element is balanced, we feel flexible, motivated, clear-headed and emotionally stable.
When it's out of balance, we may feel stuck, irritable, indecisive or physically tense — especially around the shoulders, neck, or digestion.
This makes spring an ideal time to support the Liver and gently clear stagnation — physically, emotionally and energetically.

Herbal Allies for Spring
TCM uses herbs to help harmonise the body with the seasons. In spring, we often turn to herbs that soothe the Liver, move stagnation, and support detoxification. Some traditional examples include:
- Chai Hu (Bupleurum): Helps regulate Liver Qi and relieve emotional tension.
- Mint (Bo He): Light and cooling — clears heat and supports movement of Qi.
- Dandelion root (Pu Gong Ying): Supports Liver and Gallbladder function; gently detoxifying.
- Turmeric (Jiang Huang): Invigorates blood and moves Liver Qi — especially good for menstrual stagnation or pain.
- Schisandra (Wu Wei Zi): A beautiful adaptogen that supports the Liver and stabilises emotions.
Always consult your practitioner before starting herbal formulas — especially during fertility preparation or treatment.

How to Support Yourself This Season
In addition to herbs, consider these gentle lifestyle practices to align with spring energy:
- Stretch and move: Gentle movement like yoga, walking or qigong helps move Liver Qi.
- Eat fresh greens: Include bitter and sour foods like rocket, lemon, dandelion leaves, and sprouts.
- Journal or plan: Wood governs vision and purpose — this is a great time to revisit your goals.
- Let go of what feels heavy: Emotionally and physically, spring is the season of release.
Spring reminds us that growth doesn’t have to be forceful.
It can be soft. Intentional. Rooted in deep nourishment.
Let this season be an invitation — to expand, unclench, and begin again
